He was a composer, a director, and a playwright. He wrote twenty-five different operas during his life. An opera is a stage story told through singing. Menotti also wrote the words for these stories. These written words are called libretti. He wrote all of his own libretti. This helped him make sure the music matched the words perfectly. His music used the natural rhythms of human speech. This made the stories feel very real and expressive to the listeners.

Making an opera is a big job with many steps. Menotti would first write the words for the story. Then, he would write the music to go with them. He often wrote music that was easy for people to enjoy. He did not like music that sounded too strange or disconnected. Instead, he used a style that felt very melodic. He wanted his music to highlight the meaning of the text. This way, the audience could feel the drama of the play. He even wrote music for ballets and many different orchestral pieces.

Menotti's journey began in a small place in Italy.

He was born in 1911 in Cadegliano-Viconago. He was the sixth child in a large family of ten. His mother was a talented musician who gave him many lessons. As a young child, he was a prodigy. He started writing music when he was only seven years old. By age eleven, he wrote his first opera for a puppet show. He later studied at the Milan Conservatory and the Curtis Institute of Music.

Many of his works became very famous around the world. In 1950, his opera The Consul won a Pulitzer Prize. He won a second Pulitzer Prize in 1955 for The Saint of Bleecker Street. He also wrote a famous Christmas opera in 1951. It was called Amahl and the Night Visitors. This story was inspired by a painting by Hieronymus Bosch. It was the first opera ever made for television in America. Because it was so good, it became a yearly holiday tradition. His music was performed in many different languages and countries.

Menotti loved to bring people together through the arts. He started the Festival dei Due Mondi in Spoleto, Italy, in 1958. He also started the Spoleto Festival USA in 1977. These festivals helped people share music and art across the ocean. He also spent time teaching students how to compose music. He lived in a house called Capricorn with his partner, Samuel Barber. They hosted many artists and thinkers at their home. Menotti's life was filled with a great love for storytelling and song.
