James Horner was a famous American composer and conductor. A composer is someone who writes original music for others to play. He worked on more than 160 films and television shows between 1978 and 2015.

His music helped tell stories on the big screen. He was known for mixing different sounds together in unique ways. He often combined large orchestras with voices and electronic sounds. He also loved using motifs, or repeating musical ideas, that sounded like Celtic music.

Making film music is a very big job. Horner often worked for many months on a single project. For the movie Avatar, he worked for over two years. He said he worked from four in the morning until ten at night. This kind of hard work made him feel far away from everything else.

He also wrote the music for the CBS Evening News. He said the music had to change to match the news. If the news was about a flower show, the tone was different.

Horner's love for music started when he was very young. He began playing the piano at only five years old. He also learned to play the violin. He studied music at the Royal College of Music in London. Later, he earned a degree from the University of Southern California. He even taught a music theory course at UCLA.

He won many important prizes for his talent. Horner won two Academy Awards, which are famous prizes for movies. He won for the music in the film Titanic. That soundtrack became the best-selling orchestral film music ever made. He also won six Grammy Awards and two Golden Globes.

His music was in many famous movies like Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan. He also wrote music for family films like The Land Before Time and Casper.

Horner's music connects many different worlds. He worked with famous directors like James Cameron and Ron Howard. He also worked with producers like Steven Spielberg. Sometimes he used parts of older music in his own songs. He used pieces from classical composers like Prokofiev and Wagner. Some people even used his music in movie trailers. His music lives on in the films people still watch today.
