He is most famous for his songs in Disney animated films. His music helps bring magical characters and worlds to life on the screen. People all over the world know his melodies from movies like The Little Mermaid and Aladdin. He has become one of the most important names in modern film music.

Menken creates music through many different steps and partnerships. He often works with lyricists, who are people that write the words for songs. He has worked with many famous writers like Howard Ashman and Tim Rice. Sometimes he writes the music for a whole movie, called a score. Other times, he focuses on the catchy songs that characters sing. This teamwork helps make the songs feel perfect for the story being told.

His journey into music started very early in his life. He was born on July 22, 1949, in Manhattan, New York. His father was a dentist who played the boogie-woogie piano. His mother was an actress, a dancer, and a playwright.

As a young boy, Menken took lessons for the piano and the violin. By age nine, he was already winning contests for his own musical pieces.

Menken has earned many of the highest honors in the music world. He has won eight Academy Awards, which are also called Oscars. He also has eleven Grammy Awards and seven Golden Globe Awards. He is one of only 22 people to win an EGOT. An EGOT is a very special achievement for winning an Emmy, a Grammy, an Oscar, and a Tony Award. He won a Tony Award for his work on the Broadway musical Newsies in 2012.

His work connects the magic of movies to the excitement of the theater. Many of his songs started in animated films like Beauty and the Beast. Later, those same stories became big hits on Broadway stages. He also wrote music for the musical Little Shop of Horrors. That show was a huge success and even became a movie in 1986. From Disney films to live plays, his music stays with people for a long time.
