Previn's life began in Berlin, Germany, as part of a Jewish family. His father, Jack Previn, was a lawyer and a music teacher. André showed great talent for the piano at a very young age. He started studying at the Berlin Conservatory when he was only six. However, things changed in 1938 when he was told he was no longer welcome there because he was Jewish. His family moved to Paris to study music theory. Later that year, they sailed to New York City and eventually moved to Los Angeles. To learn English, he read comic books and watched films with a dictionary.

His professional journey started very early in the movie industry. In 1946, while still in high school, he began working for Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. The studio hired him because he was talented and could work fast. His first official credit was for a film in the Lassie series called The Sun Comes Up in 1949. While working at the studio, he was drafted into the military in 1950. During his service, he took private conducting lessons from Pierre Monteux. These lessons helped him prepare for his future as a leader of orchestras. He later left his steady job at MGM to try new things in classical music.

Previn held many important leadership roles with famous orchestras around the world. He was the music director for the Houston Symphony Orchestra from 1967 to 1969. He also led the London Symphony Orchestra as its principal conductor from 1968 to 1979. Other major roles included leading the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra and the Los Angeles Philharmonic. He also served as the chief conductor for the Royal Philharmonic and the Oslo Philharmonic. He was a very busy leader who often performed on television shows. For all his hard work, he won ten Grammy Awards for his recordings.

He even wrote music for the stage, including two operas and two musicals. His work included songs in both English and German. He also wrote many pieces for smaller groups, like a clarinet quintet or a string quartet. Even near the end of his life, he was still creating, such as his monodrama called Penelope. His ability to move between jazz, film, and classical music made him a very unique artist. He truly lived a life filled with many different sounds.
