He is widely recognized as a central figure in late 20th-century music. Many experts describe him as one of the most famous living composers in the world. Glass is best known for developing a style called minimalism. This musical approach relies on repetitive structures and shifting layers. He creates complex textures by building up patterns that change gradually over time.

Minimalism works through a specific mechanical process of repetition and addition. Glass uses repetitive musical phrases as the foundation of his compositions. He builds these phrases into different layers that interact with one another. This technique creates a sense of constant, subtle movement. Much of this rhythmic thinking was inspired by Indian music. While working with Ravi Shankar and Alla Rakha, Glass learned about additive rhythm. In this system, rhythms are built by adding small units together. This helped him develop a unique way to perceive musical time.

Glass's career includes a vast variety of musical forms and genres. He has composed 15 operas and 15 symphonies. His catalog also includes 12 concertos and nine string quartets. Beyond classical stages, he is a prolific composer for film and theater. He has written scores for many famous movies, such as The Truman Show and The Illusionist. He also writes music for Broadway productions like The Crucible and King Lear. These works show his ability to move between large orchestral pieces and intimate theater music.

His musical journey began in Baltimore, Maryland, where he was born in 1937. His father owned a record store, which provided a rich environment for musical discovery. Glass spent many hours listening to various recordings in the shop. He developed a deep appreciation for Western classical composers like Beethoven and Schubert. In fact, Glass shares a birthday with his favorite composer, Franz Schubert. His early education included studying the flute at the Peabody Preparatory. He later studied mathematics and philosophy at the University of Chicago at age 15.

During this time, he was also influenced by the French New Wave in cinema. In 1966, he traveled to northern India. This trip was a turning point that led him toward Buddhism. He eventually met the 14th Dalai Lama in 1972. Since then, Glass has remained a strong supporter of Tibetan independence.

Throughout his career, Glass has earned significant international recognition. He has received four Grammy Award nominations, including two for Best Contemporary Classical Composition. His film work has earned him three Academy Award nominations for scores like Kundun and The Hours. He has also won a Golden Globe, a BAFTA Award, and a Drama Desk Award. In the United States, he received the National Medal of Arts in 2010. He was also honored with the Kennedy Center Honors in 2018. In 2025, the World Soundtrack Academy gave him a Lifetime Achievement award.

His work connects the worlds of classical music, cinema, and experimental theater. In the late 1960s, he formed the Philip Glass Ensemble to perform his new minimalist works. Because traditional venues were often uninterested, he performed in art galleries and studio lofts. This helped link his music to the visual arts community. He even worked as a studio assistant for the sculptor Richard Serra. Today, his music remains a bridge between different artistic disciplines. Whether in an opera house or a movie theater, his repetitive, layered style is instantly recognizable.
