Adams's musical style is a unique blend of different traditions. He draws from the minimalist tradition of composers like Steve Reich and Philip Glass. Minimalism often uses repetitive patterns and steady rhythms. However, he also incorporates the massive orchestral textures found in late Romanticism. This style is associated with composers like Wagner and Mahler and focuses on grand climaxes. His approach serves as a reaction against modernism and serialism. These were strict musical movements from the Second Viennese and Darmstadt Schools.

His musical journey began in a home filled with diverse sounds. Born on February 15, 1947, in Worcester, Massachusetts, he grew up in a musical family. His mother was a big band singer and his father was a clarinetist. He was exposed to jazz, Americana, and Broadway musicals. He even met the famous jazz musician Duke Ellington at his grandfather's dance hall. Adams began playing the clarinet in the third grade. He later studied composition at Harvard University. He was the first Harvard student permitted to write a musical composition for a senior thesis. This piece was titled The Electric Wake. It featured an amplified soprano and an ensemble of electric strings and keyboards.

Adams moved to San Francisco to teach at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music. During this time, he moved away from strict modernism. He was inspired by the writings of John Cage. In 1977, he composed Phrygian Gates for solo piano. He described this piece as his first mature composition and his official "opus one."

He also wrote Shaker Loops, which is a string septet. His orchestral works, such as Harmonium and Harmonielehre, brought him national attention. Harmonielehre was inspired by a vivid dream. In the dream, he saw an oil tanker lift off the water like a rocket.

Adams is highly regarded for his ability to turn history into opera. His first opera, Nixon in China, was written with librettist Alice Goodman. It tells the story of President Richard Nixon's 1972 visit to China. This work began a long collaboration with theater director Peter Sellars. They worked together on every one of Adams's operas until 2022. Another significant work is The Death of Klinghoffer, composed in 1991. This opera was based on the 1985 hijacking of the Achille Lauro. It focused on the death of Leon Klinghoffer, a retired Jewish American passenger. This subject matter caused considerable controversy.
