Oratorio

arts Maturity 7-9 Next article →

An oratorio is a grand kind of musical story. It uses a large choir to sing together. It also features solo singers and an orchestra or other instruments. You might think it sounds like an opera. They both use many singers and instruments to tell a tale. However, an oratorio is usually performed as a concert. There are no big sets or costumes like in a theater. The singers do not act out the scenes on a stage. Instead, the music tells the story through beautiful sounds.

Making an oratorio involves many different parts working together. The text is often called a libretto. This text can tell a story about history or myths. Many oratorios use sacred subjects from the Bible. This makes them perfect for performances inside a church. Some composers write about the lives of holy saints. Other composers write about famous religious leaders. The music can be very complex and layered.

History shows us how this music began in Italy. The word comes from a Latin word meaning to speak or pray. It is linked to special services held in Rome. In the late 1500s, people sang in prayer halls called oratories. One of the first works was by Emilio de Cavalieri in 1600. It was called Rappresentatione di Anima, et di Corpo. Later, Monteverdi wrote a secular oratorio in 1624. This was a story not based on religion.

Many famous names helped make oratorios popular over the years. In the 1700s, George Frideric Handel became very well known. He wrote the famous piece called Messiah in 1741. He also wrote Esther, the first English language oratorio. Later, Joseph Haydn wrote The Creation in 1798. This work is still very famous today. In the 1800s, Felix Mendelssohn wrote Elijah for a festival. These great composers helped the music reach many people.

Oratorios continue to change in our modern world. Some modern works use stories from different beliefs. For example, Dudley Buck wrote about the life of Buddha. In the 21st century, composers still write new pieces. Some stories are based on science or even poems. Even popular musicians like Paul McCartney have written them. They might use the ideas of Charles Darwin or even the stars. This shows that music can tell any story we imagine.
