In this kind of theater, the music is the most important part. Singers take on dramatic roles to act out a plot. They often wear colorful costumes and perform on stages with beautiful scenery. Sometimes, dancers or ballet performers join the show too. An opera is usually a team effort. A composer writes the music, while a librettist writes the words. These words are found in a small book called a libretto.

A performance usually happens in a large building called an opera house. A group of musicians, known as an orchestra, plays the music. Since the early 1800s, a conductor has led the orchestra.

In many operas, singers use two different styles. One is called recitative, which sounds a bit like speaking. This style helps move the story forward quickly. The other is called an aria. An aria is a formal, beautiful song. It lets a character share their deep feelings with the audience.

Opera began in Italy at the end of the 1500s.

A man named Jacopo Peri wrote a piece called Dafne around 1597. While that work is lost, his later work, Euridice, still exists today. Another very important composer was Claudio Monteverdi. His work L'Orfeo, written in 1607, was the first opera to be performed regularly. Soon, opera spread across Europe. Composers like Henry Purcell in England and Jean-Baptiste Lully in France helped start their own traditions. By the 1700s, Italian opera was the most popular style in many lands.

Many famous people helped shape how opera sounds.

In the late 1700s, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart wrote famous works like The Magic Flute. During the 1800s, Giuseppe Verdi and Richard Wagner became huge stars in Italy and Germany. Wagner even changed how music worked by creating "endless melody." In the 1900s, composers tried many new styles. Some used very modern sounds, while others kept things more traditional. Famous singers like Maria Callas helped people all over the world fall in love with these voices.

Even though opera is an old tradition, it is still very much alive.
