In an opera, singers take on dramatic roles. They do not just sing songs. They act out the plot. The words they sing are found in a small book. This book is called a libretto.

Most operas use a large group of musicians. This group is called an orchestra. A leader, known as a conductor, helps them play.

Opera began in Italy at the end of the 1500s. One of the first famous works was L'Orfeo. It was made by Claudio Monteverdi.

Later, the art spread across Europe. In the 1700s, Italian style was very popular. Singers became the stars of the show. Some used a special style called recitative. This sounds like a mix of singing and speaking. It helps move the story along. Other parts are called arias. An aria is a beautiful, formal song. It lets a character show deep feelings.
