Long ago, people found clever ways to help music sound good. In ancient times, builders used metal vases. They put these vases between the seats. The vases helped voices sound stronger and clearer. In the 1600s, Italy saw many new opera houses. The Teatro San Cassiano in Venice was the first public one. It opened in 1637. Later, wealthy leaders paid for these buildings. In the 1800s, more people helped pay for them. In the United States, some towns used the name "opera house" for any theater. They did this to make the theater seem more grand. Today, many groups use ticket sales and gifts to keep these houses open.
