The Velvet Underground was a famous American rock band. They formed in New York City in 1964. This group changed music forever by mixing rock and roll with experimental sounds. These strange sounds are often called the avant-garde. While they did not sell many records at first, they became very influential. Many people call them one of the most important bands of their time. They helped start new styles like punk rock and new wave.

The band had a classic lineup of four members. Lou Reed was the singer and played the guitar. John Cale was a multi-instrumentalist from Wales. He played the viola, keyboards, and bass. Sterling Morrison also played the guitar. Moe Tucker was the drummer who had a very special style. She often played while standing up. She used mallets instead of sticks and rarely used cymbals. Once, she even used garbage cans as drums!

The band's history began when Lou Reed met John Cale. Reed was a songwriter who liked to try new guitar sounds. Cale was a student of classical music. He had worked with composers who used long, steady notes called drones. These drones became a big part of the band's early sound. Before they were named The Velvet Underground, they used other names. They were once called The Warlocks and The Falling Spikes. They chose their final name in November 1965.

In 1966, the famous artist Andy Warhol became their manager. He helped them record with Verve Records. The band lived and worked at Warhol's studio, called The Factory. They were part of a big show called the Exploding Plastic Inevitable. This show combined the band's music with films and flashing lights. The lights were so bright that the band wore sunglasses on stage. Their first album was released in 1967. It was called The Velvet Underground & Nico. It featured a German singer named Nico. The album cover had a famous yellow banana on it.

Even though the band stopped working together in the early 1970s, their music stayed important. The members worked on solo projects for many years. In 1993, the original members reunited for several shows. These shows were very popular with fans. They even joined the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1996. In 2004, Rolling Stone magazine ranked them as the 19th greatest artist of all time. They even won a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2017. Their music still inspires many new artists today.
