He was known for his unique, deadpan singing voice. He also used poetic and experimental ways to play the guitar. Reed wanted to bring the feeling of a novel to rock music. In 1958, he recorded a single with a group called the Jades. He learned to play the guitar by listening to the radio. Later, he studied English at Syracuse University. There, he met a great poet named Delmore Schwartz. Schwartz taught him how to use simple words to reach great heights. This lesson helped Reed become a talented songwriter.

In 1965, Reed helped form the band the Velvet Underground.

The group included John Cale, Sterling Morrison, and Angus MacLise. Later, Moe Tucker joined as the drummer. The band became the "house band" for the artist Andy Warhol. They often performed at Warhol's art studio, called The Factory. Although they were not famous right away, they changed music forever. Many people say their music inspired others to start their own bands.

After leaving the band in 1970, Reed started a solo career. He released twenty solo studio albums over many years. His second album, Transformer, was released in 1972. This album was produced by David Bowie. It helped Reed become very well known to the public. One of his most famous songs from this time was "Walk on the Wild Side." He also had successful albums like Berlin and New York.

Reed's life had many different parts and many achievements.

He faced hard times with health and addiction in his life. However, he achieved sobriety in the early 1980s. He returned to making great music with albums like The Blue Mask. In 1996, he joined the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame with his band. He was inducted again as a solo artist in 2015. His work remains a major part of music history.
