He was a major part of the Beat Generation. This was a group of writers and artists. He was also a key figure in postmodern literature. His work changed both popular culture and underground art. Many people thought his writing was very special. Some called him a genius. Others said he was one of the most important writers after World War II. He used his books to look at how society works. He often used dark humor to make his points.

Burroughs used many unique ways to create his art. One famous method was the cut-up technique. He did this with the help of Brion Gysin. This was a way of writing using chance. He would cut up pieces of text. Then he would mix them and put them back together. This helped him find new meanings in words. He also made many visual artworks. One type he was known for was called "shotgun art." He also worked with many different musicians. He even appeared in several films during his life.

His life began in St. Louis, Missouri, in 1914.

He grew up in a very wealthy family. His grandfather started the Burroughs Adding Machine company. This company grew into the large Burroughs Corporation. As a young boy, he was interested in magic. He even wrote an essay about telepathy in 1929. He went to Harvard University to study English. Later, he studied anthropology and medicine in Vienna. His education helped him see the world in new ways.

Burroughs had a very complex life with many changes. In 1942, he joined the U.S. Army for World War II. He later struggled with a serious drug addiction. This addiction lasted for the rest of his life. In 1951, a tragic event happened in Mexico City. He was involved in the death of his wife, Joan Vollmer. This led to a legal case for manslaughter. He also faced censorship for his book, Naked Lunch. This book was published in 1959. It was part of a major legal case in the United States.
