They are known as one of the most influential groups of the 20th century. The band changed how people heard music. They helped develop large public address systems for loud sound. They also used synthesisers, which are electronic keyboard tools. Pete Townshend helped create new guitar styles using feedback and power chords.

The band used a style called auto-destructive art. This meant they would smash guitars and drums on stage during a show. Pete Townshend once broke his guitar head on a low ceiling. He smashed it because the audience laughed at him.

The band grew out of an earlier group called the Detours. The main members grew up in Acton, London. Roger Daltrey, Pete Townshend, and John Entwistle all went to Acton County Grammar School. Daltrey started the Detours in 1959. He even kept a close eye on the band's money. Entwistle joined after Daltrey saw him carrying a bass on the street. In 1964, they changed their name to The Who. They chose the name because it had a "pop punch."
