A record label liked their music but did not like that name. The label gave them a list of new names to choose from. The band picked the name Blur instead. They signed with Food Records in March 1990. This helped them start their career as professional musicians.

The band's music has changed many times over the years. Their first album was called Leisure, released in 1991. It used sounds from styles called Madchester and shoegaze. Later, they moved toward a style called Britpop. This style celebrated British culture and used catchy pop melodies. They were influenced by older groups like The Beatles and The Kinks. In 1997, they changed again to a lo-fi style. This was inspired by American indie rock groups. They even tried electronic and art rock sounds in 1999.

They always liked to experiment with new ways to make music.

One of their biggest moments happened in the 1990s. Their album Parklife came out in 1994 and was a huge success. The song "Girls & Boys" became a very big hit. It reached number 5 on the UK singles chart. This album helped make the Britpop genre very popular. In 1995, the band was part of a famous event. It was a chart battle against a rival band named Oasis. People called this the "Battle of Britpop."

Blur won this specific battle. Their song "Country House" sold more copies than the Oasis song "Roll With It."

Being in a famous band can be a hard job. In 1992, the band traveled to the United States. They were trying to earn money to pay off a debt of £60,000. During this trip, the members felt very homesick for England. They even had some physical fights because they were frustrated. Later, the band faced different problems with the media. Some people thought they were not "authentic" compared to Oasis. These difficult times caused the band to stop working together for a while. They disbanded for several years after their tour in 2003.

Even after breaks, Blur has continued to make music. They reunited in 2009 for a tour in Europe. In 2012, they won a Brit Award for Outstanding Contribution to Music. They released a new album called The Magic Whip in 2015. This was their sixth album in a row to reach number one in Britain. They took another break after that tour ended. However, they returned again in 2023 with an album called The Ballad of Darren.
