The music was bright and very catchy. It used guitars to create fun sounds for people to enjoy. This style was a reaction against American grunge music. Many people felt grunge was too dark or sad. Britpop felt full of youthful energy and joy instead.

It helped bring British rock music into the mainstream. People often linked it to a feeling called Cool Britannia. This spirit reminded many of the famous "Swinging Sixties" era.

Bands in this movement followed certain musical patterns. They loved the sounds of British pop from the 1960s. They also used ideas from 1970s glam and punk rock. Some even used 1980s indie pop styles.

For example, the band Blur liked The Kinks and Pink Floyd. The band Oasis took inspiration from The Beatles. Other groups like Elastica loved arty punk rock. These artists showed great respect for the music of the past. They used catchy hooks that young British people loved.

Many important groups helped start this movement. The indie music scene in Manchester was a big part of it. Groups like The Stone Roses and Happy Mondays were very important.

Even before the name Britpop was used, songs like "There She Goes" by The La's helped build the foundation. In 1991, the band James released the song "Sit Down." This song had a very British sound. Some people say Britpop really began around the spring of 1992. This was when Suede released their first records to great acclaim.

There were four famous bands called the "big four." These were Oasis, Blur, Suede, and Pulp.

A famous rivalry happened in 1995 between Blur and Oasis. People called this "The Battle of Britpop." It was a huge event in the British news. Oasis became incredibly successful with their album (What's the Story) Morning Glory?. This album is one of the best-selling in the UK. Other bands like Pulp also had huge hits. Their album Different Class sold over 1.3 million copies in the UK.

Britpop was about more than just songs. It changed how people dressed and even influenced politics.

The Union Jack flag became a very popular symbol. People used it to show pride in their country. By the late 1990s, the Britpop era began to change. Some bands stopped making music or changed their style. New types of music began to take over the charts. Bands like Coldplay and Travis helped start a new era called post-Britpop. This showed how music is always moving and growing.
