The name is a short way to say Japanese popular music. It became a huge part of the music scene during the 1990s. Many different styles live under this one name. People love J-pop because it mixes so many different sounds together. It can even include hip hop, Latin music, or gospel music.

There are special ways that J-pop sounds different from other music. Some singers use a style of pronunciation that sounds a bit like English. For example, the singer Keisuke Kuwata pronounced the word "karada" as "kyerada." In the past, Japanese music used a different set of notes called a pentatonic scale. It did not usually use the "major second" note found in Western music. However, rock bands changed this when they became popular. They began using those new notes to create catchy songs.

This helped the music feel fresh and new to listeners.

The history of this music goes back many years. Before J-pop, there was a type of music called kayōkyoku. This music was popular from the 1920s all the way to the 1980s. In the 1950s and 1960s, a rock and roll craze called rockabilly began. A group called Kosaka Kazuya and the Wagon Masters helped start this trend. They played songs like "Heartbreak Hotel" by Elvis Presley.

This era helped change how music was made in Japan. It led to many new styles that fans still enjoy today.

Many famous names and big moments helped shape J-pop. In 1961, Kyu Sakamoto released a song called "Ue wo Muite Arukō." Many people know it as "Sukiyaki." It was the first Japanese song to reach number one in the United States. It even sold one million copies to earn a gold record.

Another big moment was in 1966 when the Beatles played at the Nippon Budokan. This was the first time a rock band performed there. These events showed how much people in Japan loved new musical ideas.

Today, J-pop is linked to many other fun parts of Japanese culture. You can often find J-pop music connected to anime shows. It also connects to things like Vocaloids and VTubing.

Some musicians, like Hide from the band Greeeen, say they love mixing many styles. They might use rock, hip hop, and breakbeats all at once. Whether it is through a dance beat or a rock guitar, J-pop is a way for people to share joy. It is a living, changing world of sound.
