Sometimes, musicians took Japanese songs and added Cantonese lyrics. In the 1980s, many young people formed their own bands. These groups wrote original music about politics and social life. They moved away from simple love songs. This helped the music feel more personal and real. It gave the genre a very strong and unique voice.

The history of this music goes back many years. Western-style music first arrived in China through Shanghai in the 1920s. After 1949, many people moved from Shanghai to Hong Kong. These immigrants helped start the first generation of artists. In the 1960s, Cantonese music was mostly opera or funny songs. People often preferred music from Britain or America instead. However, singers like Connie Chan Po-chu became famous teen idols. This helped more people start to enjoy Cantonese singing.

Cantopop reached its highest point during the 1980s and 1990s. The term "Cantopop" was first used in 1978.

During the 1990s, four stars were called the "Four Heavenly Kings." They were Jacky Cheung, Andy Lau, Leon Lai, and Aaron Kwok. These singers were famous in Taiwan, South Korea, and Japan. They appeared in many movies and advertisements. In the 2000s, singers like Eason Chan became very important. He won many awards for his Cantonese albums. The music spread to places like Vietnam, Thailand, and Indonesia.

Today, Cantopop is a big part of music history. It links many different styles and cultures together. Even when new types of music became popular, Cantopop stayed important. It changed from big-name stars to "people's singers" who met fans often.
