Many people called her the "Queen of Cantopop" because of her huge impact on music. She was also known as the "daughter of Hong Kong."

People loved her for her high-powered performances and wild dancing. She often wore very bold and outrageous costumes on stage. Her singing voice was a contralto, which is a deep and rare type of female voice. This unique sound helped her become a true icon in Asia.

Her path to stardom began with a lot of hard work. As a young child, she sang with her sister, Ann Mui. They performed in many places like theaters and even on the streets.

At age 15, she had to take a year off from singing. She had developed nodules on her vocal cords from performing too much. After her rest, she returned to the stage with a voice that was one octave lower. This change did not stop her from becoming a massive star.

In 1982, Mui entered a big singing contest called the New Talent Singing Awards. She beat over 3,000 other people to become the champion.

This win gave her a major break in the music industry. Her 1985 album, *Bad Girl*, was a giant success. It sold over 400,000 copies in just one week. This record remains the highest-selling album of all time in Hong Kong.

Throughout her long career, Mui achieved many amazing things. She performed in about 300 concerts and starred in more than 40 films.

She won many awards, including the Jade Solid Gold Best Female Singer award five years in a row. She also acted in famous movies alongside stars like Jackie Chan and Stephen Chow. Her fame reached far beyond Hong Kong to places like Taiwan, Japan, and Malaysia. In 1994, she even sold over 10 million albums in a single year.

Even after her career ended, her legacy lived on through others. Mui was a kind mentor to many new singers in Hong Kong. In 2003, she announced she had cervical cancer. She died later that year at the age of 40. Her sister Ann had also passed away from the same disease three years earlier. Today, people still honor her memory in many ways.
