This early experience as a busker built her professional foundation.

Her career faced a major physical challenge during her teenage years. At age 15, she performed at up to six venues per day. This intense schedule caused her to develop nodules on her vocal cords. Doctors advised her to take a full year off to recover. During this time, she studied art with her cousin. When she returned to performing, her vocal range had changed. Her voice was now one octave lower than before. However, this change did not stop her rise to stardom.

In 1982, Mui entered the first New Talent Singing Awards. This contest was organized by TVB and Capital Artists. She competed under the stage name Yi Na. Mui emerged as the champion by beating over 3,000 other contestants. Her winning song was "The Windy Season." This victory led to a contract with Capital Artists. While her first album had a lukewarm response, her later work was much more successful. She worked with fashion designer Eddie Lau to develop a unique personal style.

Mui achieved incredible commercial success throughout her twenty-one-year career. Her 1985 album, *Bad Girl*, became a massive hit. It sold over 400,000 copies in just one week in Hong Kong. This remains the highest-selling album in the territory's history. In 1994, she became the first female singer in Hong Kong to sell over 10 million albums in a single year. She also performed roughly 300 concerts. Her fame spread to Taiwan, China, Singapore, Korea, Japan, and Malaysia. She even performed at the 1988 Summer Olympics opening ceremony in Seoul.

Beyond music, Mui was a highly respected actress. She starred in more than 40 films over two decades. Her roles included action-thrillers, martial arts, comedies, and dramas. She won the Best Actress Award at the Golden Horse Awards in 1987 for the film *Rouge*. She also worked with famous actors like Jackie Chan and Stephen Chow. Her film career showed her ability to handle many different genres. She even won a Best Actress award at the Changchun Film Festival in 2002.

Mui's life ended after a battle with cervical cancer. She announced her diagnosis in 2003. Her sister, Ann Mui, had died from the same disease three years earlier. Mui held eight final concerts at the Hong Kong Coliseum in late 2003. During these shows, she performed a symbolic act called "marrying the stage." She wore a white wedding dress and veil while singing "Sunset Melody." She passed away on December 30, 2003, at the age of 40.
