Many people called her the "Madonna of the East." This was because she became a huge star in many countries. She was known for her tender mezzo-soprano voice. Her music was special because it mixed different styles. She combined traditional Middle Eastern sounds with Western pop music. She used songs from Jewish folk tales and poetry. This helped many people learn about Mizrahi culture.

For example, she recorded with Thomas Dolby and the band The Sisters of Mercy. Some of her songs were even used in hip hop music.
