Haza's musical style relied on a complex mixing of sounds. She used elements of Eastern and Western instrumentation and orchestration. Her songs often featured Middle Eastern percussion paired with classical instruments. She also incorporated dance-beats that were popular in the club scene. Her lyrics were often drawn from Mizrahi and Jewish folk tales and poetry. This method allowed her to bridge different musical traditions. She was the youngest of nine children. Her parents, Yefet and Shoshana, were Mizrahi Jews from Yemen. They emigrated to Israel in 1949. Her mother, Shoshana, had been a professional singer in Yemen. This was a major influence on Ofra's musical direction. At age 12, she joined a protest theater troupe called Hatikva. A neighbor named Bezalel Aloni became her manager and mentor. She also served two years in the Israel Defense Forces.

The significance of her work is seen in her many awards and chart positions. In 1990, she received an award in Monaco for World's Best-Selling Israeli Artist.
