As a young child, she sang religious hymns with her father. At that time, it was not common for girls to sing in public in the countryside. To help her, her father sometimes dressed her in boys' clothes for performances. She eventually moved to the big city of Cairo in the early 1920s. There, she learned to play the oud, which is a wooden instrument with strings. She also worked with famous poets and many talented composers to create her music.

Umm Kulthum's career grew steadily over many decades.

In 1924, she began making audio recordings for companies like Odeon Records. By 1926, she moved to His Master's Voice, which paid her much more. She became one of the highest-paid performers in the city of Cairo. She also starred in six major films, such as Weddad in 1936. For forty years, she performed a special concert on the first Thursday of every month. This helped her become a role model for many young female singers.

She was not just an entertainer; she was also a leader for her country.
