Sayed Darwish was a legendary Egyptian singer and composer. Many people call him the father of Egyptian popular music. He was one of the greatest musicians in his country's history. His music was very special because it spoke for the people. He wanted his songs to show the feelings and hopes of everyone. This helped create a new sense of national pride in Egypt.

Darwish created music in a very unique way. He mixed traditional Arab musical forms with Western instruments. He often used a piano in his songs. He also used a European musical group led by a maestro named Signore Casio. This was a change from the traditional small groups used before. He even used sounds from the streets and everyday life in his work. This made his music feel very real to the people listening.

His life began in Alexandria on March 17, 1892. As a young man, he worked as a bricklayer to help his family. A manager for the Syrian Attalah Brothers heard him singing and hired him. Later, he moved to Cairo to work in musical theater. He worked with famous people like the comedian Naguib el-Rihani. He also collaborated with the singer Munira al-Mahdiyya. He wrote 26 operettas, which are musical plays, during his career.

Darwish was very busy making many different types of music. He composed about 260 songs in total. He wrote 10 adwâr, which are long musical pieces in colloquial Arabic. He also wrote 21 muwashshahat, which are poetic musical forms. Some of his songs were written about real events. For example, his 1914 song talked about fuel shortages. His music helped people express their feelings during the 1919 revolution.

Today, many people still listen to his beautiful melodies. His song "Bilaadi! Bilaadi!" became the national anthem of Egypt. Many famous singers like Fairuz have sung his songs. His work is a big part of Middle Eastern culture. People remember him with statues and even a special stamp. He died in September 1923 at the age of thirty-one. His music remains a way for people to feel connected to their history.
