Sayed Darwish was a famous singer and composer from Egypt. Many people call him the father of Egyptian popular music. He was born in Alexandria in 1892. As a young man, he worked as a bricklayer to help his family. Later, he found work in music. He wrote many songs and 26 operettas, which are musical plays.

His music was very special because it felt real to people. He used sounds from the streets and everyday life. He mixed traditional Arab music with Western instruments. He often used the piano in his work. This helped create a new, modern sound. His songs were not just for fun. They spoke about the feelings of the people. He wrote about social justice and the struggle for freedom in Egypt.

Many of his songs are still loved today. One of his songs became the national anthem of Egypt. His music was enjoyed by both rich and poor people. He died in 1923 at the age of thirty-one. Even now, his work helps people feel proud of their culture. He is remembered with statues and even a special stamp.
