He wrote poems in Egyptian Arabic. This is the way local people talk. Many people called him a folk hero. He wrote about his country and his love for it. Negm also wrote about life in prison. He won first place in a writing contest while he was there. His first book was called "Pictures from Life and Prison."

Negm is well known for his work with Sheikh Imam. Imam was a singer and a composer. He played the Oud, which is a wooden instrument with strings. The two men met in 1962. They became roommates and worked together for over thirty years. Negm wrote the words, and Imam played the music. They made a famous duo that people loved.

Negm lived in poor parts of Cairo. This helped him meet many talented artists. He was often in trouble with the law. He was even sent to prison several times. This was because of his political views. In 2007, the United Nations named him an Ambassador of the Poor. He won a Prince Claus Award in 2013. He died in Cairo at the age of 84.
