It is an interactive system used for entertainment. People use a microphone to sing over instrumental versions of famous songs. These tracks have no lead singer, only the music. Usually, lyrics appear on a video screen to guide the singer. Sometimes, a moving symbol or changing colors show the words. This helps everyone join in the fun together. In places like Hong Kong or Singapore, people call these rooms KTV.

How karaoke works has changed a lot over time. Early machines used cassette tapes or 8-track tapes to play music. In the 1980s, companies used LaserDiscs to show music videos with lyrics. Later, scientists created networked systems that sent music through phone lines. This was an early version of streaming music on demand.

Today, you can find karaoke on smartphones and video games. You can sing anywhere using apps or online platforms. It has become a huge global market worth nearly $10 billion. Even professional singers use it to practice their skills.

There is a big debate about who first invented the machine. One famous name is Daisuke Inoue from Japan. He was a musician in the city of Kobe. In 1971, he made machines called "8 Juke" for snack bars. These machines used ¥100 coins and 8-track tapes. He even made the songs easier to sing by changing the keys.

Another name is Roberto del Rosario from the Philippines. He created the Sing-Along System, or SAS, in the 1970s. His machine used cassette tapes and songbooks to help people sing.

Both inventors were very important to the history of music. Del Rosario held a patent for his singing system. He also won a Gold Medal for Best Inventor in 1985.

Inoue did not patent his machine, but he helped create the business model. He even won a funny Ig Nobel Peace Prize in 2004. Another person, Shigeichi Negishi, made the Sparko Box in 1967. His machine was one of the first to be sold to many people. These inventors helped turn sing-alongs into a global hobby.

Karaoke links to many things we use every day. It started from the old idea of people singing together. It grew because of new tools like tapes and digital music.
