You use a microphone to sing along. The music is just the instruments. The words show on a screen to help you.

In some places, people call these rooms KTV.

People have many ideas about who made karaoke. Daisuke Inoue from Japan made machines in 1971. He used 8-track tapes for the music. He even made the songs easier to sing. Roberto del Rosario from the Philippines also made a system. He called his machine the Sing-Along System. It used cassette tapes and songbooks. He is the only person with a patent for it.

Today, karaoke is everywhere. You can find it in bars or at home. Some people use apps on a phone. It is even used to help people learn to speak in public. It is a big part of how people have fun together.
