arts Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Indie pop is a special kind of music and a way of living. It mixes catchy guitar pop with a DIY spirit. DIY stands for "do it yourself." This means musicians do not need big, famous record companies. They can record and release their own songs instead.

People often call themselves "popkids" or "popgeeks" if they love this music. They value the music because it feels honest and real. It is often much sweeter than other types of rock music.

This music has a very specific sound. It uses upbeat melodies that are easy to sing along to. Many bands use a "jangle" sound on their guitars. This comes from the 1960s style used by bands like The Byrds.

Indie pop is different from indie rock. Indie rock can sometimes sound loud, harsh, or angry. Indie pop is usually more melodic and less abrasive. It borrows the simple style of punk but adds sweetness. It sounds much more accessible to most listeners.

The history of indie pop began in the late 1970s. It grew out of a British music style called post-punk. Some people say indie music was actually invented in Scotland. This happened when the Postcard Records label started in 1979.

Many different groups and labels helped the music grow. In 1986, a famous tape called C86 was released. This tape helped define the indie pop scene for many people. In the 1990s, the music spread to the United States. A label called K Records was started in Washington in 1982.

Indie pop has many different branches today. One branch is called twee pop, which is very simple. It often features boy-girl harmonies and songs about love. Another branch is called chamber pop. This style uses many instruments like trumpets and violins.
