Lo-fi music is a special style of sound. The name comes from "low fidelity." This means the recording quality is not perfect.

Most professional music tries to be very clean. Lo-fi is the opposite of that high-quality sound. People often love it because it feels nostalgic. It can also feel very relaxing to listen to. These feelings come from the small mistakes in the sound. Many artists choose to keep these sounds on purpose. They want the music to feel real and warm.

How does a song become lo-fi? It happens through many different kinds of sounds. Some sounds come from the recording tools themselves. This might include tape hiss or a wobbly pitch. Other sounds come from the person playing the music. They might play a note that is slightly out of tune. You might even hear a person cough or sniff.

You can even hear a chair move or a car pass by. Some people make these sounds by using cheap equipment. They might even put a microphone in a wastebasket! This creates a thin or fuzzy sound that people recognize.

This way of making music has a long history. The term "lo-fi" has been around since the 1950s. It grew as people started using "high fidelity" tools. In 1976, the Oxford English Dictionary defined it as lower quality. By the 1980s, people began to love home recordings. A radio host named William Berger helped make the name popular. He had a show on WFMU in New Jersey. His show ran from 1986 to 1987.

He played recordings made on inexpensive equipment. This helped people see the brilliance in simple music.

Many famous artists have used this lo-fi style. The Beach Boys made albums called Smiley Smile and Wild Honey. They recorded these in a home studio. These are sometimes called the "Bedroom Tapes."

Other important artists include R. Stevie Moore and Paul McCartney. R. Stevie Moore is often called the "godfather of home recording." In the 1990s, people called this "DIY" or "do it yourself" music. Many bands like Guided by Voices and Pavement used this style. These artists showed that you do not need a big studio. You can make great art with just your own ideas.

Today, lo-fi has changed even more with the internet. A new style called "bedroom pop" has become very popular. This is music made by artists in their own rooms.

Artists like Clairo and Boy Pablo became famous on YouTube. The internet helps these DIY videos reach many people. You can even find special lo-fi playlists on Spotify. Some people use lo-fi hip-hop to help them relax. It is a way to connect through simple, honest sounds. Even as technology gets better, the charm of lo-fi remains.
