Sampling is a way to make new music using old sounds.

A musician takes a small piece of a recording and calls it a sample. This piece can be a drum beat or a melody. It might even be a short bit of speech. Musicians can change these sounds in many ways. They can make them faster or much slower. They can also change the pitch of the sound. Some artists layer many samples on top of each other. They use special tools like samplers or computer software to do this. This process lets them turn tiny sounds into brand new songs.

There are many ways to use a sample in a song.

An artist might use a loop to repeat a sound. A loop is a sound that plays over and over. They can also use equalization to change how the sound feels. Some people use a process called interpolation instead. This is when an artist recreates a sound rather than using the original recording. This way, they only need permission from the people who wrote the music. Sampling is a huge part of remix culture. It allows people to build new art from what already exists.

This way of making music has a long history.

In the 1940s, a French composer named Pierre Schaeffer created musique concrète. This was experimental music made by cutting and looping magnetic tape. He used sounds from kitchen tools and trains. He even made an instrument called the Phonogene to play these loops. In the 1960s, Jamaican producers used reggae rhythms to make new tracks. Later, Jamaican immigrants brought these ideas to hip-hop in the 1970s. These early steps paved the way for the digital tools we use today.

New technology made sampling much easier for everyone.

The term "sampling" was first used in 1979 for the Fairlight CMI. This was a special machine that could record and play back short sounds. Later, cheaper tools like the Akai S950 and E-mu Emulator appeared. In 1988, the Akai MPC was released to change everything.

It had pads that let artists play samples like a drum kit. This tool helped hip-hop grow very quickly. Many producers used the E-mu SP-1200 for its gritty sound. Today, most people use digital audio workstations on computers to sample.

Sampling has changed almost every kind of popular music.

It is a foundation of hip-hop music. In the 1980s, producers sampled funk and soul records for beats. One famous piece is the Amen break from a 1969 song. It has been used in thousands of different recordings. In 1996, DJ Shadow released Endtroducing. This was the first album made entirely from samples. Sampling also shows up in pop and electronic music. It is a creative way to honor the music that came before us.
