Synthesizer

arts Maturity 7-9 Next article →

A synthesizer is a special electronic instrument that creates audio signals. It is used to make many different kinds of musical sounds. Musicians use different methods to build these sounds from scratch. One way is called subtractive synthesis, which shapes sound waves. Another way is additive synthesis, where sounds are built up. There is also frequency modulation synthesis used to create tones.

These sounds can be changed by many different parts. Filters can boost or cut certain parts of the sound. Envelopes control how a note begins and how it ends. Low-frequency oscillators can change the pitch or the volume.

People play these instruments in many different ways. Most people use a keyboard to play the notes. Some people use a sequencer to control the music. You can also use software or other instruments to play them. Synthesizers can even talk to other gear using MIDI. MIDI is a standard way to make electronic instruments work together.

This connection helps many different machines play in sync. This technology has been a standard in the industry since 1982. It allows for much more complex music to be made.

The history of these machines is very long and interesting. Early instruments like the Telharmonium and theremin used electricity. In 1957, the RCA Mark II was built in New Jersey. That huge machine used 750 vacuum tubes to work. It even used punched paper tape to control the sound.

Later, Robert Moog changed everything with his new designs. He created the Moog synthesizer which was first sold in 1964. He invented important parts like voltage-controlled oscillators and filters. These parts helped make the instruments much easier to use.

Many famous models helped change how music sounds today. In 1970, the Minimoog became the first to be sold in stores. It was smaller and much easier to carry around. In 1978, Sequential Circuits released the Prophet-5. This was the first instrument that could store sounds in memory.

Then, the Yamaha DX7 arrived in 1983. It was a digital synthesizer that sold over 100,000 units. It made sounds that felt glassy or even chilly.

The Korg M1 is another huge success in history.

Synthesizers are now part of almost every kind of music. In the 1960s, they were seen as very experimental. A famous album called Switched-On Bach helped them become mainstream.

Rock stars like Keith Emerson used them to find fame. Today, you can find them in pop, rock, and hip hop. Some people use big machines with many knobs and wires. Others use software programs that run on a computer. They are as important to modern music as the human voice.
