Some people also call it techno-pop. This name was used to describe the music scene in Japan. The music matters because it changed how people make pop songs. It brought new electronic sounds to the whole world.

Making this music involves special machines.

Musicians use synthesizers, drum machines, and sequencers to create songs. In the early days, some machines could only play one note at a time. This made the music sound a bit like robots. These songs often had simple, repeating patterns called riffs. Later, new tools like the TR-808 rhythm machine helped.

This machine helped create steady beats for dancing. These tools made the music easier for everyone to enjoy.

Long before synth-pop was a famous genre, other bands used electronic sounds. In the mid-1960s, new synthesizers became available for studios. A man named Robert Moog created the Moog synthesizer in 1964. This machine could make entirely electronic sounds. Bands like Kraftwerk used these sounds in their "Krautrock" music. In 1971, Wendy Carlos made a synth soundtrack for the film A Clockwork Orange. This was one of the first times people in the UK heard electronic music. These early steps helped build the path for synth-pop.

Many famous artists helped the genre grow in the late 1970s and 1980s. In 1979, Gary Numan had a huge breakthrough in the UK. In Japan, the band Yellow Magic Orchestra used the TR-808 rhythm machine.

This band influenced many British groups. In the 1980s, duos like Erasure and Pet Shop Boys became very popular.

They found great success on the US dance charts. Other famous singers included Annie Lennox and Marc Almond. These artists helped make the music feel more emotional and grand.

Synth-pop connects to many different types of music you might know. It grew out of the post-punk and new wave movements. While it started with electronic sounds, it later used sounds from soul music too. It even influenced new styles like house music and Detroit techno.
