In their early years, they used traditional instruments too. They played the flute, violin, and organ. They would then change these sounds using electronic devices. This helped them create a very unique feeling.

The band started in Düsseldorf in 1970. Ralf Hütter and Florian Schneider were the founders. They met as students at a music school. At first, they played experimental rock music. This was part of a scene called krautrock. In 1973, Wolfgang Flür joined the group. Karl Bartos joined them in 1975. This group of four is often called the classic line-up. They worked together for many years to build their sound.

Kraftwerk has released many important albums. "Autobahn" came out in 1974 and was a big hit. "Trans-Europe Express" was released in 1977. "The Man-Machine" followed in 1978. "Computer World" was released in 1981. The song "The Model" reached number one in the UK.
