They were made of two musicians named Thomas Bangalter and Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo. The pair met at a school in Paris in 1987. They first played in an indie rock band called Darlin'. That group only lasted about six months. After that, they used money from an 18th birthday gift to buy electronic instruments. They chose their name from a funny music review. The review called their old music "a daft punky thrash."

Their music was a mix of many different styles. They combined house, funk, disco, techno, rock, and synth-pop. In 1997, they released their first big album called Homework. It featured famous songs like "Around the World" and "Da Funk." By 1999, the duo began wearing robot costumes. They used helmets, outfits, and gloves to hide their faces.

This helped them maintain a mysterious persona during public appearances. They wanted to keep their identities a secret from the world.

The duo became even more famous with their second album. It was called Discovery and came out in 2001. This album included hits like "One More Time" and "Digital Love." They even worked with artist Leiji Matsumoto on an animated film. This film was called Interstella 5555.
