Daft Punk was an influential French electronic music duo.

The group consisted of Thomas Bangalter and Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo. They were central figures in the French house movement. This musical movement combined several styles like house, funk, disco, techno, rock, and synth-pop. The duo is widely regarded as one of the most important acts in electronic dance music history. They changed how electronic music was produced and perceived by a global audience.

The duo's origin began with an indie rock band called Darlin'. Bangalter, Homem-Christo, and Laurent Brancowitz formed this trio in 1992. They named themselves after a Beach Boys song. Darlin' only lasted about six months and produced four songs. After the band disbanded, Bangalter and Homem-Christo shifted toward electronic music. They used money from Bangalter's 18th birthday to purchase electronic instruments. They took their new name from a negative review in Melody Maker. The reviewer called their music "a daft punky thrash." The musicians found this description amusing and adopted it.

Their musical career progressed through several distinct stages and albums. Their debut album, Homework, was released in 1997 through Virgin Records. This album featured successful singles such as "Around the World" and "Da Funk." In 1999, the duo began adopting robot personas. They used helmets, outfits, and gloves to disguise their identities during media appearances. Their second album, Discovery, arrived in 2001. This era was marked by hits like "One More Time" and "Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger."

This album also inspired the animated film Interstella 5555, supervised by Leiji Matsumoto.

Following Discovery, the duo released Human After All in 2005. This third album was written and recorded in just six weeks. While the music received mixed reviews, singles like "Robot Rock" and "Technologic" were successful in the UK. The duo also ventured into film with an avant-garde science-fiction movie called Electroma in 2006. They also performed a massive world tour during 2006 and 2007. This tour featured a large LED-fronted pyramid for their performances.

The live album from this tour, Alive 2007, won a Grammy Award for Best Electronic/Dance Album.

The impact of their live performances was significant. The Alive 2006/2007 tour is credited with broadening the appeal of dance music in North America. Some critics even compared its influence to the Beatles' 1964 appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show. This tour helped bring dance music into the mainstream.

Their ability to connect electronic sounds with large-scale visual production changed live music expectations.

In their later years, Daft Punk achieved massive commercial success with their final studio album. They moved to Columbia Records in 2013 to release Random Access Memories. The lead single, "Get Lucky," reached the top 10 charts in 27 different countries.

In 2016, they achieved their only number one on the Billboard Hot 100 with the song "Starboy," a collaboration with The Weeknd.

Daft Punk's legacy is cemented by numerous critical accolades. Rolling Stone ranked them as the 12th-greatest musical duo of all time in 2015. They also included Discovery and Random Access Memories on their list of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.
