TVXQ is a highly influential South Korean music group. They are often called "Asia's Stars" or the "Kings of K-pop." This title reflects their massive role in the Korean Wave, which is the global spread of South Korean culture.

The group has achieved unprecedented success in both South Korea and Japan. They are recognized as one of the most successful music acts of their generation in Asia. Their impact on the music industry is measured by millions of record sales and record-breaking concert tours.

The group's formation began in 2003 under SM Entertainment. Producer Lee Soo-man sought to create a new vocal dance unit to compete in the growing K-pop market. He selected five teenage boys from four different training teams. The original lineup included U-Know Yunho, Hero Jaejoong, Micky Yoochun, Xiah Junsu, and Max Changmin. To build group chemistry, the members lived together in a small dormitory. They spent many weeks in intense training and rehearsals.

Choosing a name for the group was a complex process. The members considered several options, such as SM5 and Dream Team. They even suggested the name Dong Bang Bul Pae, which means "Invincible East" in Korean. However, management rejected this name because the Hanja, or Chinese characters, were not aesthetically pleasing. They eventually settled on the name Dong Bang Shin Ki. The group made their official debut on December 26, 2003. They performed their first single, "Hug," at a showcase featuring BoA and Britney Spears.

In their early years, TVXQ experienced rapid commercial success in South Korea. Their first studio album, Tri-Angle, debuted at number one on the MIAK charts in 2004. The single "Hug" remained on the charts for ten consecutive months. Their second Korean album, Rising Sun, became a major breakthrough in 2005. The title track, "Rising Sun," became a signature piece for the group. This album earned them the daesang, or grand prize, at the M.net KM Music Video Festival. Their third album, "O"-Jung.Ban.Hap., also reached number one and won the Golden Disk Award for Album of the Year.

The group's journey included a significant expansion into the Japanese market. They signed with the Japanese label Avex Group in late 2004. The transition was not easy, as the members had to learn Japanese to perform effectively. They released their first Japanese single, "Stay with Me Tonight," in 2005. While their early efforts in Japan were difficult, they eventually became mainstream stars. Their fourth Japanese single, "Sky," reached number six on the Oricon Singles Chart. This success helped them become one of the top-touring artists in Japan.

In 2010, the group faced a period of internal conflict and legal turmoil. Three members—Jaejoong, Yoochun, and Junsu—attempted to split from SM Entertainment. This led to a hiatus for the group. However, TVXQ returned in 2011 as a duo consisting of U-Know Yunho and Max Changmin. They released the album Keep Your Head Down, which topped charts across major Asian markets. As a duo, they continued to break records. Their tenth Japanese album, XV, made them the first foreign act in Japan to achieve six consecutive number-one albums.

TVXQ's legacy is defined by extraordinary statistics and milestones. They sold over 10 million physical records during their first ten years of activity. In Japan, they are recognized as the best-selling foreign artist of all time. Their Time Tour in 2013 was one of the highest-grossing tours of that year. They were the first non-Japanese Asian artists to headline a nationwide five-dome tour. They also became the first foreign artists to headline the Nissan Stadium. To celebrate their 20th anniversary, they held a successful three-day performance at the Tokyo Dome in April 2025.
