The group consists of seven members: Jin, Suga, J-Hope, RM, Jimin, V, and Jung Kook. They are highly involved in their own creative process. The members co-write and co-produce much of their musical material. Their name, Bangtan Sonyeondan, translates literally to "Bulletproof Boy Scouts."

J-Hope explained that the name represents a desire to block out stereotypes and criticisms aimed at adolescents. In 2017, the group expanded their brand identity to include the phrase "Beyond the Scene." This new meaning symbolizes growth from a boy into an adult who opens doors facing forward.

The group's formation began in 2010 under Big Hit Entertainment. CEO Bang Si-hyuk wanted to create a hip hop group centered around the underground rapper RM. At that time, physical album sales were declining globally. Bang decided to form an idol group to utilize live performances and fan support. Unlike many highly regimented idol groups, Bang wanted his members to remain individuals. The members lived together and practiced for up to 15 hours every day.

They officially debuted in June 2013 with the single album 2 Cool 4 Skool.

BTS's musical style has evolved significantly since their debut. They began with an old-school 1990s hip hop sound. Their early "school trilogy" explored the pressures students face in the educational system. Songs like "No More Dream" and "N.O." addressed the anxiety of meeting parental expectations. Later, they moved into different genres with the "youth trilogy." This series of albums, including The Most Beautiful Moment in Life, explored themes of loneliness and success. Their lyrics often reference literature, philosophy, and psychology to explore the journey toward self-love.

The group's commercial success reached massive proportions over time.

According to the Circle Chart, they are the best-selling musical act in South Korean history. They have sold more than 40 million albums. Their 2020 album, Map of the Soul: 7, was the first in South Korea to surpass both four and five million registered sales. In 2016, their album Wings became their first to sell one million copies in South Korea. They have also achieved massive success in the United States. They were the first Korean ensemble to receive RIAA Gold certification for the single "Mic Drop."

BTS has broken numerous records in the global music market.

The group has addressed three sessions of the United Nations General Assembly. In 2017, they partnered with UNICEF for the Love Myself anti-violence campaign. They were named one of the 100 most influential people in the world by Time in 2019. In 2018, they became the youngest recipients of the South Korean Order of Cultural Merit. This honor recognized their work in spreading Korean culture and language worldwide.

Even with global fame, the members have fulfilled their national obligations. In June 2022, the group announced a pause in activities for mandatory military service. All members completed their 18 months of service by June 2025. Following this period, they released their first group album in nearly four years, titled Arirang, on March 20, 2026. This return marks a new chapter in their ongoing history of musical and cultural impact.
