Born Lee Ji-eun on May 16, 1993, she is a central figure in the K-pop industry. She is often called the "Queen of K-pop" by media outlets like Billboard and NME. This title reflects her massive influence and consistent success in music and television. She has become a rare solo artist to dominate a market often led by large groups. Her career spans music, acting, and hosting, making her a multifaceted entertainer.

IU's journey to stardom involved significant personal challenges and persistence. Her family faced difficult financial times during her childhood. She lived in a small studio with her grandmother and cousin for over a year. During this period of poverty, she experienced very little contact with her parents. She showed early interest in acting and attended various classes. Despite attending 20 auditions, she failed to succeed in any of them initially. She was also targeted by fake entertainment companies during her search. Eventually, she trained for ten months at Good Entertainment before signing with LOEN Entertainment in 2007.

Her professional career began in 2008 when she debuted at age fifteen.

Her stage name, IU, was chosen to mean "I and You become one through music." Her first single, "Lost Child," was a dark ballad from her EP *Lost and Found*. While the album did not achieve commercial success, she was named "Rookie of the Month" by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism. Early on, her image was often directed toward a "cute" or youthful persona. This included songs like "Boo" and "Marshmallow," which used retro sounds and girlish costumes. IU later admitted that these specific styles sometimes made her feel awkward.

National stardom arrived with the release of her 2010 EP, *Real*.

The lead single, "Good Day," became a massive hit across South Korea. The song is famous for its climax, featuring three high-pitched notes sung in semitone increments. It spent five consecutive weeks at the top of the Gaon Digital Chart. Billboard later ranked "Good Day" as the number one K-pop song of the 2010s. This success helped establish her "little sister" image, a term used to describe her relatability to the public. As she grew, her music evolved away from mainstream K-pop styles. She began exercising more creative control as both a lyricist and a producer.

IU's statistical achievements in the music industry are record-breaking.

She has released twelve EPs and five studio albums. Among these, five albums reached number one on the Gaon Album Chart. Most notably, she has achieved thirty-one number-one singles in South Korea. This makes her the artist with the most number-one songs in the country. In 2020, her single "Eight," produced by Suga, reached number one on the Billboard World Digital Song Sales chart. Her massive popularity is also reflected in her live performances. She was the first solo female K-pop act to perform at the Olympic Gymnastics Arena in Seoul. She also became the first Korean female artist to hold a solo concert at the Seoul Olympic Stadium in 2022.

Beyond music, IU has built a respected career in acting.

She made her acting debut in the 2011 teen drama *Dream High*. In the series, she played Kim Pil-sook, a girl dreaming of becoming a singer. She also released the song "Someday" for the show, which sold over two million digital copies. Her later roles in series such as *My Mister* (2018) earned her critical acclaim. This performance led to her first Best Actress in Television nomination at the 55th Baeksang Arts Awards. Her acting continues with upcoming projects like *When Life Gives You Tangerines* (2025).

In 2023, *Rolling Stone* ranked her as the 135th greatest singer of all time. She has consistently appeared on the *Forbes* Korea Power Celebrity list. Since 2012, she has been included in the top ten of this list six times. She reached the peak ranking of number one in 2025. Her ability to succeed in both the music and drama industries has earned her the title "Queen of K-pop and K-drama." Her career serves as a major example of how an artist can transition from a teen idol to a respected creative leader.
