Formed in Düsseldorf in 1970, they are credited with popularizing electronic music. The group developed a unique style they call "robot pop." This style blends electronic sounds with pop melodies. They use sparse arrangements and repetitive rhythms. They also maintain a highly stylized image. Members often wear matching suits during their performances. This creates a sense of order and precision.

The band's sound is created through specific electronic processes. They use synthesizers to generate melodic tones. They also utilize drum machines to provide rhythmic beats. A key tool in their sound is the vocoder. A vocoder is a device that processes human voices.

This allows them to create electronic vocal effects. In their earliest years, they also used traditional instruments. They played the flute, violin, and organ. They then used electronic devices to distort these sounds. They used audio-tape manipulation and multiple dubbings to change the music.

Kraftwerk's history can be divided into several distinct musical stages. Their early years from 1970 to 1973 were experimental. They were part of a German scene called krautrock. During this time, they released two instrumental albums. These albums featured free-form improvisations. In 1973, the group began to rely more on machines. This marked a shift toward their signature electronic sound. The addition of Wolfgang Flür and Karl Bartos helped stabilize the group. This quartet is considered the classic live line-up.

The band's international breakthrough occurred in the mid-1970s. The 1974 album *Autobahn* was a major commercial success. It reached number 5 on the Billboard Top LPs & Tape in the US. Following this, the band invested in new technology. They used instruments like the Minimoog and the EMS Synthi AKS. They also built their own recording space called Kling Klang Studio. This studio allowed them to become more independent. They eventually made the studio portable for their tours.

Between 1977 and 1982, Kraftwerk released several iconic albums. *Trans-Europe Express* was released in March 1977. *The Man-Machine* followed in May 1978. This album featured a famous cover inspired by the Suprematism movement. In 1981, they released *Computer World*. This album used a Texas Instruments language translator for some vocals. The single "The Model" became their most successful song in the UK. It reached number one on the charts.

Their ability to combine technology with melody changed how people view electronic instruments. They proved that machines could create catchy, popular music.

The band has received many prestigious honors for their work. In 2014, they received a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award. In 2018, their live album *3-D The Catalogue* won a Grammy for Best Dance/Electronic Album. They were also inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2021. This induction was in the early influence category. As of 2026, the band continues to tour. Their live performances celebrate over fifty years of musical history.
