They chose this name because they want their music to be like a fragrance. A-chan said that perfume can soothe feelings or make people happy. They hope their art can do the same for their fans. The group is very successful in Japan and around the world. They are well known for their amazing dance moves and futuristic shows.

Their music has a very special sound called technopop. They work with a producer named Yasutaka Nakata to create this style. They use electronic dance music like techno, house, and bitpop.

To make their music sound even more high-tech, they use tools called autotune and vocoders. These tools change how their voices sound to create a polished effect. Their performances often use new technology and bright, futuristic imagery. This makes their live shows feel like they are from the future.

The group began their journey in the year 2000. They first formed in Hiroshima at the Actors School Hiroshima.

Originally, the group had a different third member named Yuka Kawashima. When she left to focus on her studies, Ayano Ōmoto joined the group. This created the trio of Nocchi, Kashiyuka, and A-chan that fans know today. In 2003, the girls moved from Hiroshima to Tokyo to grow their careers. They joined a management agency called Amuse Inc. during this time.

Perfume had a major breakthrough in 2007 with their song "Polyrhythm." This song was used in a national recycling commercial on NHK. After that, their success grew very quickly. Their album Game, released in 2008, reached number one on the Oricon charts. This was a huge deal because they were the first technopop group to do this since 1983. They started a long streak of nine albums in a row that reached number one. They also released many other hits like "Chocolate Disco" and "Electro World."

Perfume has shared their music with many different people. In 2010, they performed for 50,000 fans at the huge Tokyo Dome. This was only the second time an all-female group held a concert there. They also traveled to Macau to win a Best Asia Artist Award.
