After the group ended in 1976, he started his solo career. He released his first solo album, Circus Town, that same year. He also worked on a project called Niagara Triangle Vol. 1. This was a special collaboration with Eiichi Ohtaki and Ginji Ito.

Many of his songs became huge hits in Japan. His 1980 song "Ride on Time" reached number three on the charts. This helped him become a major star. His most famous song is "Christmas Eve." It first appeared on his 1983 album called Melodies. This song sold nearly 2 million copies. It has stayed on the Japanese charts for over 35 years. It even topped the charts in 1990.

Yamashita has worked with many talented people. He often makes music with his wife, Mariya Takeuchi. They worked together on the song "Plastic Love." He also worked with an American writer named Alan O'Day. They co-wrote songs like "Magic Ways" and "Fragile." A Hawaiian band called Greenwood even translated his songs into English.
