Many people call her the "Queen of City Pop." This is a special style of music. She has sold more than 16 million records. Her music is loved by many people in Japan. Even today, her songs reach the top of the music charts. She even became the oldest Japanese singer to top the Oricon charts in 2020.

Music has been part of Mariya's life since she was very young.

She grew up in a family that ran a traditional Japanese inn. Her family played music from all over the world in their home. Mariya learned to play the piano and the guitar by the third grade. The music of the Beatles inspired her to travel and learn more. In 1972, she went to the United States as an exchange student. She lived in Rock Falls, Illinois, during her third year of high school.

Mariya began her professional career in the late 1970s.

She joined a music club at Keio University. In 1978, she signed with a record label called RCA. She released her first single, "Modotte oide, Watashi no Jikan," that same year. She won many awards for being a great new artist in 1979. This included prizes from the Tokyo Music Festival and the Japan Music Awards. She also released a popular album called "Love Songs" in 1980.

Sometimes, Mariya took breaks from being a singer.

In 1981, she decided to pause her music career for a while. During this time, she married the musician Tatsuro Yamashita in 1982. She did not stop making music, though. Instead, she wrote songs for other famous singers. She wrote hits for artists like Akina Nakamori and Miho Nakayama. Many of these songs became very popular on the Oricon charts. She later returned to making her own albums in 1984.

Mariya's music has become famous all over the world. Her song "Plastic Love" was on her 1984 album called "Variety." At first, she did not think the song would be a hit outside of Japan. She thought it was too hard because the lyrics were in Japanese. However, the song became a huge hit on the internet years later. It has millions of views on YouTube now. She still makes new music today. In 2021, she started a duo called Peach & Apricot with the singer Anri.
