She is widely recognized as the "Queen of City Pop," a genre of Japanese pop music. Takeuchi is one of the most successful music artists in Japan. She has sold over 16 million records throughout her career. Her influence spans decades, reaching both local fans and a massive international audience. Even in her later years, she continues to achieve major milestones on the music charts.

Music was a central part of Takeuchi's early life in Shimane Prefecture.

She grew up in her family's traditional Japanese inn, known as Takenoya. This business was founded by her great-grandfather in 1877. Her family frequently played records from all over the world. This exposure helped her learn the piano and guitar by the third grade. The music of the Beatles inspired her desire to travel. In 1972, she spent a year in Rock Falls, Illinois, as an international exchange student. During this time, she was known by the nickname "Mako."

Takeuchi's professional journey began in the late 1970s. She joined a university music club and participated in early recordings.

In August 1978, she signed with the RCA recording label. She released her debut single, "Modotte oide, Watashi no Jikan," and her first album, *Beginning*, in November 1978. Her early career was marked by rapid success. In 1979, she won several prestigious honors, including the Japan Record Awards and the Tokyo Music Festival. These awards recognized her as a best new artist. Her 1980 album, *Love Songs*, also reached the top of the Oricon Charts.

In 1981, Takeuchi decided to take a temporary hiatus from her career as a performer.

During this break, she married fellow musician Tatsuro Yamashita in 1982. Although she paused her own concerts, she remained very active in the music industry. She focused on composing and writing songs for other popular "idols" and singers. Her compositions for artists like Naoko Kawai and Akina Nakamori became major hits. For example, her song "Kenka wo Yamete" reached the top ten on the Oricon charts. She also wrote "Heart to Heart," which was recorded by the Carpenters in 1983.

Takeuchi returned to releasing her own music in 1984 after signing with Moon Records.

Since her return, she has released seven successful studio albums. Every one of these albums has reached number one on the Japanese Oricon chart. She has also produced eight top-ten hit singles as a singer-songwriter. Her song "Camouflage" was her only single to reach the number one position. She continues to write for many different artists, including Seiko Matsuda and Takako Matsu. Her ability to write hits for others has remained a constant throughout her career.

One of her most significant achievements is the global resurgence of her music. Her 1984 song "Plastic Love," from the album *Variety*, became a major international phenomenon.

Initially, Takeuchi believed the song would not succeed abroad because the lyrics were in Japanese. However, the song went viral on YouTube during the mid-to-late 2010s. It became a staple in the vaporwave and future funk music scenes. By June 2021, the song had received more than 67 million views on YouTube. It has earned critical praise from international music figures and creators.

Takeuchi's career is defined by both longevity and versatility. In 2020, she became the oldest Japanese singer to have a single top the Oricon Charts. This happened when she re-recorded her song "Inochi no Uta." She also continues to collaborate with other artists in new ways. In 2021, she formed a duo called Peach & Apricot with the singer Anri. Their first collaboration, "Watching Over You," was released in November 2021. Beyond music, she also managed her family's traditional inn starting in 2018. Her life reflects a deep connection to both modern pop culture and Japanese tradition.
