Naoko Takeuchi is a highly influential Japanese manga artist. She is most famous for creating the Sailor Moon series. This work is considered one of the most popular manga series of all time. Her stories often blend different styles of storytelling. One style is mahō shōjo, which focuses on magical girls. Another is sentai, which often features teams of heroes. Through her work, Takeuchi helped spark a resurgence of the magical girl genre in the late 1990s.

Takeuchi's path to professional art was unique because of her scientific background. She attended Kofu Ichi High School in Yamanashi, Japan. There, she joined the astronomy and manga clubs. Her interest in space and comics would later shape her famous stories. Her father encouraged her to prepare for a stable career. Because of this, she studied chemistry at the Kyoritsu College of Pharmacy. She graduated and became a licensed pharmacist. Her senior thesis focused on the effects of ultrasound on thrombolytic actions.

Her career in the manga industry began in 1986. She entered the field at age 19 after submitting her work, Love Call, to Kodansha. This story earned her the Nakayoshi New Artist award. She then wrote a series called The Cherry Project, which focused on ice skating. While working on that, she wanted to create a story about outer space and female fighters. Her editor, Fumio Osano, suggested the fighters wear sailor suits. This idea led to the one-shot Codename: Sailor V.

In December 1991, the Sailor Moon series began serialization in Nakayoshi magazine. It became an immediate success. Between 1991 and 1997, Takeuchi produced 60 chapters of the manga. These chapters were eventually collected into 18 volumes. The massive popularity of the series led to many different media. This included a 200-episode anime adaptation and three animated films. It also resulted in numerous video games and many products for fans to buy.

Takeuchi also manages her own professional interests through her studio. She founded Princess Naoko Planning, also known as PNP. She established this studio to manage her intellectual properties, especially Sailor Moon. The studio has also been involved in the credits for other anime projects. For example, PNP appears in the credits for the anime series Hunter × Hunter. This connection exists because Takeuchi married the famous manga artist Yoshihiro Togashi. They married in 1999 and have two children.

Throughout her career, Takeuchi has faced several professional challenges. In the late 1990s, the magazine RunRun was canceled. This caused the planned anime adaptation of Sailor V to be canceled as well. Later, her series PQ Angels was canceled because Kodansha lost seven pages of her manuscript. These events led her to move from Kodansha to the publisher Shueisha. She also found the demands of assisting on Hunter × Hunter to be more than she expected. Despite these setbacks, she continued to create new works like Toki☆Meca.

In recent years, Takeuchi has overseen many new versions of her classic work. In 2014, the reboot anime Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon Crystal debuted. This series covered specific parts of the manga, such as the Dark Kingdom arc. She also supervised the production of two-part films titled Sailor Moon Eternal in 2021. These films adapted the Dream arc of the story. In 2023, she supervised the sequel, Sailor Moon Cosmos, which covered the Stars arc. She continues to update her website with new animations and profiles.
