Aoyama's path to professional art began with early talent. During his elementary school years, he showed great skill in painting. His work titled "Yukiai War" won a competition. This painting was displayed at the Tottori Daimaru Department Store. He later pursued formal training in Tokyo. He graduated from Yuraikuei High School before studying at Nihon University College of Art. While he was an art student, he worked a part-time job at Tokyo Disneyland. In this role, he painted backgrounds for the Pirates of the Caribbean attraction.

His professional career launched in the late 1980s through various publications. He made his debut in 1987 with a manga titled Chotto Mattete. This story featured a boy named Yutaka Takai. Yutaka used a time machine jetpack to send his love interest through time. Shortly after, Aoyama began writing Magic Kaito in the magazine Weekly Shōnen Sunday. This series follows Kaito Kid, a mysterious gentleman thief. Kaito uses illusions and master disguises to commit robberies. He is secretly a high school student named Kaito Kuroba.

Aoyama has developed several distinct types of stories throughout his career. Between 1988 and 1993, he wrote Yaiba. This was a 24-volume series about a young samurai named Yaiba Kurogane. It was even adapted into a 52-episode anime series. He also wrote Third Baseman No.4 between 1991 and 1993. This one-volume manga tells the story of Shigeo Nagashima. Shigeo is a mediocre baseball player who buys a magical bat. The bat helps him hit every pitch, but he must pay for each hit. Aoyama also designed characters for the 1994 video game Live A Live.

His most significant achievement is the ongoing series Case Closed. This story follows Shinichi Kudo, a genius high school detective. Mysterious men turned him into a child. He now uses the alias Conan Edogawa to hide his identity. While searching for the men responsible, he solves many complicated mysteries. This series has become a massive collection of work. As of April 18, 2025, it has been collected into 107 volumes. The character Kaito Kid also appears regularly within this series.

Recognition for his skill has come through prestigious industry awards. Aoyama has won the Shogakukan Manga Award twice. He received the award for shōnen manga in 1992 for his work on Yaiba. He won the same award again in 2001 for Case Closed. These awards recognize his excellence in the field of manga creation. His ability to create engaging characters and mysteries has defined his professional legacy.

His hometown of Hokuei celebrates his contributions through town revitalization projects. These projects are known as machi okoshi. The town has built the Conan Bridge across the Yura River. They have also placed various Case Closed statues around the area. In 2007, the community opened the Gosho Aoyama Manga Factory. This museum serves as a place to celebrate his long career.
