Eiichiro Oda is a legendary Japanese manga artist. Manga refers to a style of Japanese comic books. He is most famous for creating the series One Piece. This series is the best-selling manga in history. It is also the best-selling comic series ever printed in volumes. More than 600 million copies of One Piece are in circulation worldwide. Because of this massive success, Oda is one of the best-selling fiction authors on Earth. Many experts believe his work changed the history of manga forever.

Oda's path to success began with a very specific childhood goal. He was born on January 1, 1975, in Kumamoto, Japan. When he was only four years old, he decided to become a manga artist. He wanted to do this specifically to avoid having to get a "real job." His primary influence was Akira Toriyama, the creator of Dragon Ball. He also found inspiration in pirate stories, likely from the TV show Vicky the Viking. At age 17, he won second place in the prestigious Tezuka Award for his work titled Wanted!

Before launching his own series, Oda spent years honing his craft as an assistant. An assistant helps a lead artist by drawing backgrounds or inking pages. He worked for artists like Shinobu Kaitani and Masaya Tokuhiro. These roles gave him an unexpected influence on his developing artistic style. Later, he served as an assistant to Nobuhiro Watsuki on the series Rurouni Kenshin. During this apprenticeship, Oda drew two pirate-themed one-shot stories called Romance Dawn. These stories introduced the character Monkey D. Luffy, who would later become the protagonist of One Piece.

One Piece began its serialization in Weekly Shōnen Jump in 1997. Since then, the series has reached incredible sales milestones. In February 2005, it had sold 100 million collected volumes. By February 2011, that number grew to over 200 million. As of March 2019, the series had 450 million copies in print. The series has also broken numerous publishing records in Japan. In 2010, Volume 57 had a print run of 3 million copies. This was the highest first print for any book in Japan at that time. Later, Volume 67 set a new record in 2012 with 4.05 million copies.

Oda's talent has earned him many prestigious honors and awards. In 2013, he won the Grand Prize at the 41st Japan Cartoonists Association Award. He also holds multiple Guinness World Records. In 2015, he was recognized for having the most copies published for the same comic series by a single author. By July 2022, his total printed copies reached 516,566,000. In 2019, he was also included in Newsweek Japan's list of 100 Globally Respected Japanese People. These accolades reflect his massive impact on global popular culture.

Beyond the pages of manga, Oda's influence extends into film and other media. He has been heavily involved in the One Piece animated theatrical films. For the tenth film, Strong World, he created the story and drew over 120 drawings for guidance. He also acted as an executive producer for several subsequent movies, including Z, Gold, Stampede, and Red. His work has even crossed over with other famous creators. He collaborated with Akira Toriyama on a crossover story called Cross Epoch. He also worked with Mitsutoshi Shimabukuro on a crossover titled Taste of the Devil Fruit.

Oda is widely recognized as an incredibly dedicated and hardworking professional. He is described by his editors as a perfectionist. During a typical work week, he often sleeps only three hours per day. He also uses his success to support his home region of Kumamoto. After a damaging earthquake struck Kumamoto Prefecture in 2016, Oda donated 800 million yen to help. He split this into two gifts: 500 million yen given in the name of his character Luffy, and another 300 million yen. This generosity shows how his fictional stories and real-world values are deeply connected.
