Eiichiro Oda is a famous Japanese manga artist. Manga are a style of Japanese comic books. He is the creator of One Piece. This series is the best-selling manga in history. It is also the best-selling comic series printed in volumes. More than 600 million copies of his work are in circulation worldwide. Because of this success, he is one of the best-selling fiction authors. Many people say he changed the history of manga.

Oda's journey started with a very clear goal. He was born on January 1, 1975, in Kumamoto, Japan. When he was only four years old, he decided to become a manga artist. He wanted to do this so he would not have to get a "real job." He was inspired by the series Dragon Ball by Akira Toriyama. He also loved stories about pirates from a show called Vicky the Viking. At age 17, he won second place in the Tezuka Award for his work titled Wanted!

Before he became a star, Oda worked very hard as an assistant. He assisted artists like Shinobu Kaitani and Masaya Tokuhiro. Working with others helped shape his artistic style. Later, he assisted Nobuhiro Watsuki on the series Rurouni Kenshin. During this time, Oda drew two pirate stories called Romance Dawn. These stories featured a character named Monkey D. Luffy. Luffy eventually became the main hero of One Piece.

One Piece began in the magazine Weekly Shōnen Jump in 1997. The series has broken many publishing records in Japan. In 2012, volume 67 had a huge initial printing of 4.05 million copies. Oda has won many prizes, like the Grand Prize at the 41st Japan Cartoonists Association Award. He even holds Guinness World Records for his sales. In 2022, his total printed copies reached over 516 million. This shows how many people love his stories.

Oda is known for being a very hard worker. He is a perfectionist who often sleeps only three hours a day. He also cares deeply about his home in Kumamoto. After a big earthquake in 2016, he gave 800 million yen to help the area. He even made part of the gift in the name of his character, Luffy. His work reaches many places, from movies to video games. He even worked on a live-action series for Netflix.
