The stories follow a blue robot cat who travels from the 22nd century. He comes back in time to help a young boy named Nobita Nobi. Nobita is a kind and honest student, but he can be quite lazy and clumsy.

To help him, Doraemon uses a special four-dimensional pocket. This pocket holds amazing tools and inventions from the future. These items are called gadgets, and they help Nobita face his daily problems.

One famous gadget is the Anywhere Door, which is a pink door that lets you travel anywhere just by thinking. Another fun tool is the Take-Copter, a small bamboo hat that allows people to fly.

The way these stories work is very special. The creator wanted to show how technology can be a positive thing for children. Most problems in the stories are solved without using violence. Instead, the stories focus on important values like courage, respect, and family. The characters live in a "children's domain." This is a place where young people can be happy and free without adults interfering. This setting helps the stories feel very welcoming to readers in many different countries. The gadgets, like the Translator Tool, even help characters talk in any language.

The series was created by an artist named Fujiko F. Fujio. This was the pen name for Hiroshi Fujimoto. He came up with the idea after several different events happened in his life. He once wished for a machine to help him find new ideas. He also tripped over a toy and heard cats fighting nearby. He used a simple drawing style with circles and ellipses so children could understand it easily. The manga first appeared in December 1969 in several different magazines. It became a huge hit after it was turned into anime TV shows and movies.

There are many impressive numbers behind this series. As of 2024, Doraemon has sold over 300 million copies worldwide. This makes it one of the best-selling manga series ever made.

There are also many different gadgets to keep track of. While the creator said there are 1,293 gadgets, a study found 1,963 gadgets in different sketches. The series has been adapted into three different anime TV series. These started in 1973, 1979, and 2005. Shin-Ei Animation has also produced more than forty animated films for the franchise.

Doraemon is much more than just a comic book. He is considered a major cultural icon in Japan. In 2008, the Japanese Foreign Ministry even named him the first "anime ambassador." This shows how much the character means to the country. The stories connect to real life by showing parts of Japanese society. They also talk about important ideas like protecting the environment. Even though the creator passed away in 1996, his stories continue to bring joy to people everywhere. The adventures of Nobita and Doraemon remain a beloved part of history.
