It was created by an artist named Yoshito Usui. The stories follow a five-year-old boy named Shinnosuke Nohara. Most people call him Shin-chan. He lives in the city of Kasukabe in Japan. The series shows his daily life with his family and friends. Shin-chan is a very silly and mischievous boy. He often uses language in a weird or improper way. His cheeky behavior is meant to make people laugh. Because of this, some people might find his jokes hard to understand. Some gags rely on knowing Japanese culture or songs. For example, his "Mr. Elephant" impression relates to a popular children's song called "Zou-san."

Making these stories involves many different steps. First, the manga was written and drawn by Usui. It first appeared in a magazine called Weekly Manga Action in 1990. Later, the stories were collected into 50 books called tankōbon. An animated television show was also made by Shin-Ei Animation. This show has been airing on TV Asahi since 1992. The animation process turns the drawings into moving pictures with sound. The music for the show is composed by Toshiyuki Arakawa. Some episodes even include horror themes like "The Horrible Elevator." Other stories focus on the importance of family and friends. The series uses comedy, though some jokes are meant for older audiences.

History shows how much the series has changed over time. It actually started as a spin-off of another character. That character was Shinnosuke Nikaido from a series called Darakuya Store Monogatari. Yoshito Usui passed away on September 11, 2009. This was a sad time for the series. The original manga ended because of his death. However, his team found new manuscripts to work with. They decided to start a new manga in the summer of 2010. This new series is called New Crayon Shin-chan. It helps keep the character's adventures going for new fans.

There are many amazing facts about the series' success. The manga and its new version have over 148 million copies in circulation. This makes it one of the best-selling manga series ever. The animated show is also huge with over 1,200 episodes. It has been dubbed into 30 different languages. People in 45 different countries have watched the show. In the United States, different companies like ComicsOne and DrMaster handled the books. Some versions were even rated "Mature" because of the type of humor used. Even trains in Japan have been decorated with special Shin-chan designs.
